A brief note on channels, and good habbits
So in a recent, near World of warcraft forum level of Flaming over on VFXTalk’s Nuke forum, I have come to the following metaphor for life:
Give a man a fish, he eats for a day, teach a man to RTFM on fishing, and he can not clog up the forums with questions on fishing he can answer him self.
also here is a fun thing on how channels work from an outsiders POV that came up in a conversation with a friend of mine.
channels are pretty easily explained it’s like a clown car first there’s just what you THINK is in there (the four clowns occupying the norma seats [aka rgba]) then by the end of it, 57 clowns have come out, and your pretty sure there are still 7 of them in there and they can do anything you want juggle spray seltzer, swallow swords, clean up elephant poop w/e

So here’s the deal I’ve created a roto Tutorial spanning Nuke, Combustion and AE, this isn’t a “How To” for roto, this is a basics of roto for all 3 programs with some basics of roto wrapped up.
Hope you enjoy

Here I discuss the project that I went over in the light-wrap tutorial red workflow, what it’s like going to film school etc.
Enjoy guys..I’m gonna go call my mom so she has some more bragging material.

Editors notes
So after reading the article (yea…I hadn’t actually ever seen what was being published in my name… despite asking) it’s so clear how old some of this is. As is clear from the blog i’m a big nuke fan, in fact every shot was actually comped in nuke, 4 days after I wrote the bulk of what I sent Tim the articles editor, FXPHD started up as did my love for nuke, and I learned the ways of the compositor.
Lines like “but Keylight inside After Effects kills them all, especially in our shots with concrete dust flowing in front of the screen” make me laugh..while kinda true…the finesse work on many of these shots in primate was soo much better.
We never did shoot miniatures, the director kinda helped with that as did deadlines. Wish we had, would have been awesome..but after 3 months of asking for concept drawings for the hills we wanted to shoot..it never happened the result was what you see in the banner
talks of red builds that are older than moses now..well thats just funny.
Background Me: New Nuke Gizmo
So I’ve been using a backdrop with a simple background set up for key tests etc for about 6 months that a friend showed me.
It Looked something like this:
As you can see it’s a bit well… cumbersome to make every time. SO today I decided to make a gizmo, both to practice doing it, and to save time.
So here’s what I created: Backgroundme Basically it has an input to pipe in any background you all ready have or want to use. As well as colorbars (pal and smpte) checkerboard, a constant that you can change the color of.
So with some help from my friend Michael (congrats on the new job btw) it has many configureation options.

Recent Work May ‘08
So in the last week and a half, I’ve had 2 things I worked on go to air. the first is a Muisc video I worked on at Hydraulx By the R&B Super Star USHER. The Music video is for the song Moving Mountains, his second single of his new album. The entire thing was shot over the span of 4 days along with the first music video for this album Love in this Club. It’s all Green screen and great set design. A ton of roto and rig removal was needed though for shots in the rain where he’s climbing the mountain, and in the beginning when he’s walking through the burnt out club. I’m working on getting footage for my reel, so hopefully we can see some shots of that soon. I worked on the shots of Usher falling off the cliff, as well as a few of the mid shots when he’s on his knees on the top of the mountain. There are also about half a dozen of the club shots I either did work on, or as working on when they were finished by the lead compositor/editor on the smoke. Some of the shots got up to 80 masks when i was working on them for still objects alone. Detail in the rebar etc. This low quality flash video is all I can find for now.
The second Item is from a few shots I got called to work on over at ZOIC on the CBS show Criminal Minds. I have 4 shots in this sequence. Mainly the wide shots (perspective not from beneath) of the main actor (the officer) when He jumps the buildings. also the wider of the shots looking up when the bad guy (bald white guy) falls off the building. There was some hard core wire rig removal going on here, grips and cord wranglers as well as full on scaffold parts of the rig crossing buildings and sky etc.
Tabula Rasa highlights
Enjoy guys. I’m pretty excited about it all!

Nuke Basics 004 Merging-the Kamasutra of Compositing
So it seems to me that a lot of people have issues understanding the merge node in nuke. It is rather simple But i will gladly explain what is going on.
Pretend the merge node is like…your bed, it has 2 inputs you and your girl friend. Now alone you and your girlfriend (when you two are alone, not alone together but alone, drinking your self to sleep and cutting your thighs with razor blades wishing you were together) can’t really do anything to each other you can’t exchange fluids, or alpha channels cuddle, or bring out the brightness in each other.
But you add a merge node (the wild M key) and bam, your in bed together, with god only knows how many variations of what you can do. The merge node, (or over operations in any compositor) is like the Kamasutra of compositing. You can go frontwards or backwards, leftways and upways. Oh man you can even over, or top, or out and in. (I’m so hot for nuke right now I can’t even tell you) any ways, imagine now that not only are you B/F and G/f but you are into the whole tie up slapping scene, so there’s a top and a bottom. Well the merge node knows who’s who, but as young lovers often are, you guys get confused. So say you wanna swap, let her wear the chaps, and you can wear the pony tail. to switch all yu have to do is drag the ‘A’ connect to the other side, and the ‘B’ connect back to where A was, or hit shift X.
so what does this A and B stuff mean any ways, well lets just say if your the A you get to do the whipping (or be the top) ad if your B, well get some ice, cause your gonna get a whiping (or be the bottom). So when the A and the B get together out in public, (or just down the tree a bit) the top goes into the room first followed closely by the B, now imagine you’re the B and your really fat (well some of us don’t have to imagine) and your Girlfriend, the A is slim and skinny (Really nice legs btw, tell her if she ever gets board…im single me and lizzy aint hooken up no mo) so people still see your girlfriend first, but they also see you right behind her.
Now imagine if you say…went from over which is just hey, im me, and your you and what ever alpha channel info we have is all good. but what if you feel a little risky tonight, and want to go and screen each other brains out (oh I know you do…don’t hold back on my account. so what happens, well DAMN you got all crazy looking, all her bright bits are all over you, and god is it every where. But what about darken, now all her dark bits are all over you..and it doesn’t look so hot. The best thing to do is experiment, after all at your age, why not try switching stuff around, and sticking stuff where it don’t belong.
The point is there are a lot of ways to do things, and don’t forget you can adjust how far you go, kinda like a safe word using that Mix slider. And don’t forget being able to mask out wit channels. We all know how hot it can be when you use a mask…ooh…sends chills up my spine. you can merge just little parts (that game is called just the tip btw) or you can merge certain channels, invert things, and adjust bounding boxes…it really is pretty sexy.
Hope this helps. And remember if all else fails…RTFM!!

No commentsnuke Basics 003 PREMULT it sees what you can’t
premult is what you are looking for, you want to “see” your alpha much like dare devil can see sound and we can’t soo essentially what you want to do is create the sound that you here into a visual represention, or in this case alpha
the premult node is located under merge
what this does is tell nuke “hey buddy, remember that time we were out partying and i was like lets draw a mask, and you were like cool, lets do it i don’t need this extra junk on my image, and then you drew your mask made it effect the alpha, but much like that bottle of jack you and nuke had at the bar, it was gone when you were done, and no where to be found but in the garbage (or in the case of your mask the alpha channel) so now your like, hey nuke, My parents are coming home we need to get that jack back in the bottle or something so they know we weren’t drinking!.Nuke is like, yea yea, fill it with water and food dye, and then nuke goes, but i want every one to see my cool alpha you made me man! and then your like well lets go get a premult!
so you go down to that seedy side street known as the merge menu and go and grab a premult for 50 bucks and a bottle of scotch you stole from your friends parent’s cellar, and what that does is say hey alpha, all the stuff the is represented by 0 will be black and 255 as the image (instead of white in the alpha) and everything in between will be some range of transparent (1 being almost impossible to see 254 being almost 100% opaque) then when it’s all done your like “oh man nuke im sorry that alpha was pretty nasty, let me go add some feathering to you edges”
and thats kind of it…
edit in summation
premult will display all things represented by black in your alpha as black in your image and everything inbetween as some range of transparent. if you need to flip you alpha around you can do to things color->math->inverse or in the bezier node go to color and flip that slider to the other side
